with population levels sky-rocketing and space becoming increasingly scarce,why are we bothered about occasions like valentine's day??Why is valentine's day a much-hyped topic?why don't people talk about the sad state of our nation ??
Because not everybody is hopelessly convinced that the world on on the verge of doom and destruction...or that additional babies being born is a scourge to humanity.





Mostly all I hear about on the radio and TV and read in the newspapers and on YA is about ';the sad state of our nation.';





I choose to not join with the 1% of the population who happen to be obsessed with only doom and gloom.





Why do people act surprised when bad things occasionally happen...but when life is predominantly filled with love and beauty...it's ignored?Why is valentine's day a much-hyped topic?why don't people talk about the sad state of our nation ??
Because, once in awhile it's nice to escape from the happenings of the world, and have a day that celebrates something fun or wonderful.
Because people would rather think about happy topics.
You could probably ask the same of many other holidays. The corporations have a stranglehold of our consumer-driven society. They train people to consume, consume, consume.





If societies poured more resources into fixing problems instead of self-serving consumeristic holidays, our values would really be something to brag about.





Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get some flowers and candy.
You have a very interesting point of view. I admire you for thinking of our environment. I guess people like Valentine's Day for different reasons. Here are some that I thought up of:





- It's a nice break in the middle of February





-People can show others how much they care about them





-It's the most common day to ask somebody to marry them! People sure look forward to popping the question!





-Friends can make eachother Valentines





-Even grade-schoolers can admit to their crushes how much they like them





-You don't look weird wearing all red, pink, and hearts!





-Love is all around





Well, that's all I could think of. But I sure like your point of view!
I can't understand either. It is not an Indian holiday and it is without very much personal meaning .... and in Indian life there is so much that is already there and has so MUCH more meaning...The Indian Wedding Samskaras are so meaningful and so beautiful .... why St. Valentine's Day is even under consideration is a mystery to me. Maybe just something a little different??
there is a time and place to talk about the doom and gloom. it is nice to talk about something happy though :)
