at THAT time, there was no morally superior group with power to call them on their arrogance so the declarations stood.What is the common theme between the Age of Exploration and the rise of nation-states in Europe?
I think nationalism, along with economic competition, led to countries competing with each other to find the best route to China. Spain got luck and found something else.
