How were the modern nation-states of the Middle East created?

Iraq was formed when Britain decided that three provinces with tribes that constantly warred against each other should be a country. It made it easier for Britain to enter the Ottoman's.How were the modern nation-states of the Middle East created?
Put simply, Churchill drew somee lines on a map saying ';there you go, there's some countries for you; now play nicely';. Not knowing very much about traditional tribal boundaries, and nomadic cultures, things did not exactly go on as intended. Clearly when the said countries were poor, they could safely be ignored. now they are rich and powerful, their problems are ours. I guess we reap what we sow.

Clearly there is much more to it than that and if you want to do the thing properly, ignore my flippant argument's, go back as far as the Ottoman Turks, then work forwards through two world wars and things stabilise into their modern form by about 1950. Try Wikipedia. Basically, it is a tale of political and oil related meddling by whatever world power happened to have a toe-hold at any given time. How were the modern nation-states of the Middle East created?
Mostly through meddling western nations after ww 1 and ww 2.
British violence vs American money.

Changed in the 50s.

Ike realized violence

does better at short term.

Two towers down at long.
I seriously suspect that given the way the borders pay no attention to ethnic groups, cultural boundaries, and traditional frontiers that the modern nation states were created on paper by a few Europeans with some survey maps, a straightedge, an ink pen, and about a dozen bottles of gin.

No doubt it was slightly more complicated than a drunken night around the parlor table at the Cairo Cricket Club....but the results are still just as bad.

Look at other parts of the world where poeple chose where the borders would be....the frontiers follow rivers, mountain ranges, or tribal / ethnic boundaries. No nation decides out of the blue that their border is going to start right here at this point and proceed along a declination of 237 degrees 4 minutes 17 seconds magnetic for 457.38 kilometers, where it will follow a new bearing of 117 degrees 30 minutes 43 seconds for 78.55 kilometers......etc. etc.

Borders like those in the MIddle East are created out of thin air, and then imposed by external forces.

If the political and emotional equilibrium of the region could stand it, some readjustment to reflect reality would be a good thing for all concerned. Unfortunately national pride and individual egos will prevent such a thing from ever happening.

Pity, what? Off you go then....
