If Elected Will Obama Make The Nation Of Islam The 51st State?

Many of his paid staffers are acolytes of the whack job Louis Farakhan.

http://www.debbieschlussel.com/archives/鈥?/a>If Elected Will Obama Make The Nation Of Islam The 51st State?
I hope so. I want to get one of those cool busboy uniforms that Farrakhans' goons wear.If Elected Will Obama Make The Nation Of Islam The 51st State?
So we should take the word of an unidentified former employee quoted in a right wing blog? I don't think you'll fool many people with that! I also notice that the ';many'; you mention is two people... one of whom doesn't work there!

The Haters will have to do better than this...

Democrats 2008
Get real, eveyone knows it will be the 58th state, we already have 57 of them.

Calling Farakhan a whack job, is an insult to a whack job
Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.
No, the 58th. We already have 57 states according to his math. Affirmative Action at work.
No. The 58th State.
Lol. Cute, now run off and play with your Ronald Reagan action figure. Burn some rock records too.
I just hope he does not get elected. Sorry but that is not what we need, deliberate suicide.
They probably work harder than you!
Don't you mean the 58th ? We already have 57, you know.
What land would that cover?
The way the shrub turned the US into a 4th class country?

  • Forget the Rugby Tests Bring on a State of nations series?

Came up with a thought now that Ireland %26amp; England have named their teams to come out and play the All Blacks. I personally think they are a waste of time.

Why not have a State of Nations series with New zealand based players playing against those kiwis who play rugby else where, including Tony Brown over in South Africa.

I am sure this type of series after the Super 14 would be a smashing hit !!! in more ways than one.

A trophy carrying our greatest Kiwi could be up for grabs. I reckon Lancaster Park %26amp; the cake tim would be chocker full with fans. A three match series would be great for the fans.

The jersey colours could be Maroon %26amp; Gold for one team and Green %26amp; Black (?) being the colours of meads %26amp; Lochores provinces.

The coach for the overseas team could be ian Foster as well as he has plenty of time to plan as he is not normally involved in Super 14 semi's.

Any thoughts.Forget the Rugby Tests Bring on a State of nations series?
crap idea and go easy on Fozzy, great coach!Forget the Rugby Tests Bring on a State of nations series?
Rather than a state of ';nations'; why not go with the province of origin? It has been suggested in the past and brings up some interesting mixes, basically the players play for the province where they were born. It could be kind of entertaining but do you really think that the tests are going to be a waste of time? I'll be in Wellington to watch the Irish one (mainly cos I have season tickets)!
What a rat sh!t idea i hate it intensely, Im not sure Tony Brown could beat a team of 15 players from NZ considering he is about he only kiwi in SA. You should get a job on the ARU panel with them crazy rat sh!t ideas would fit right in. ';State of nation'; doesnt even make any sense for starters lay off the crack.
neil w you are a tool. worst idea ever. why on earth would you get an expat team? theres a reason most of the players have left and that is because they are ****
why not have something similar to state of origin? eg north island v south land? could be a great battlle.

Discuss why the state of Israel is often considered to be the child of the United Nations?

What are the implications of this “birth” for the region today?Discuss why the state of Israel is often considered to be the child of the United Nations?
Israel was created by a UN mandate in 1948. Muslims have always felt that muslim land is for muslims only. They have no problem immigrating to ';infidel'; lands but it is an affront to them to have ';infidels'; live in their countries.

Putting Jews in their land was a great insult and they will be always at war with Israel and their supporters until the ';infidels' are driven out of their land.Discuss why the state of Israel is often considered to be the child of the United Nations?
Israel plays a key factor in the UN because it is the only nation that can bring about an Armageddon to put it simply. A Holy War to end all wars. Basically centuries ago, the Israelites had this holy place that was called the Temple of Solomon, it was so special because the Knights Templar fought to keep it secret, what secret was held in those walls we'll never know, some say the bones of Christ, some say the Arc of the Covenant whatever it was it was special and holy and would be the downfall of the Catholic Churches Reign of Power. So the Knights Templar were called witches and everyone in association was killed, and the Temple destroyed. When the land was taken over by Muslims, they claimed it to be the same spot that Mohammad had decended from Earth to heaven. Therefore becoming a Holy Site for the Muslim world. They call it the Dome of the Rock. So we have these two incredibly vast and important religions now in disagreements over to whose land that holy site truly belongs too. According to scripture, the Temple of Solomon needs to be rebuilt in order for Christ to Return to Earth to basically ';finish the job'; and end all this sh*t here on earth, ward off all the darkness so to speak. And in order for the Temple to be rebuilt, the Dome of the Rock needs to be destroyed, and the Muslims are NOT going to allow that to happen. If it does, welcome WWIII.

Will the United States become a nation of overweight people?

I work out so I'm not going to be fat. Will the United States become a nation of overweight people?
I hope not. They have been creating more obesity awareness programs and more gyms and making it cheaper for obest people that can not really afford it. They have also been been making more healthy food choices....even fast food has been making grilled foods and salads. America is trying. Things don't change over night though. Will the United States become a nation of overweight people?
It already is a nation of lard butts. Watch an old film from the 30's or 40's and see how tiny, skinny those people used to be - we have lots more food now. Except the food we have is often of poor quality - lots of sugar - makes for big fat people.
Most adult Americans are already overweight, so we are already considered an ';overweight nations';, the real question is that will we ever become an ';obese nation';?

(Keep in mind that ';overweight'; could also just mean an extra 5 or 10 extra pounds.)
    It already is, mostly.

It's called the Obesity Epidemic for a reason. Most people in the United States are overweight or obese.
    It already is.
    already is?
the states got a lot of fat ppl
    were on our way
    we already are
    I won't!

    I LOVE my abs!

Are the United States of America ';One Nation Under God'; or ';Land of the Free';?

I felt it was worth re-asking the question because I did not mean to forget the countries north and south of us. It's just when you hear something so much, you kind of just forget I guess. Anyway, no offense intended. Are the United States of America ';One Nation Under God'; or ';Land of the Free';?
Former no, latter yes.Are the United States of America ';One Nation Under God'; or ';Land of the Free';?
Well, they are ';one nation';, that's for sure. and if god lives upstairs then you can say the US are ';one nation under god';. In that case they can still be a location on this earth where the free roam the land as they please.

They also used to be the ';home of the brave'; - but they closed the home down once all the brave had gone upstairs to god.
When the pledge was originally written in 1892 it did not contain the words ';under God.'; It remained this way until the words were added by a joint resolution of Congress in 1954, where they have remained until today.

So for 62 years there was no ';under God,'; and for 55 years we've said ';under God.'; Remember this the next time someone says we should keep the words in the pledge for the sake of tradition.

If God exists then the United States, like every other country, is a nation under him. This kind of goes without saying. And if there is no God the statement is false but harmless - certainly I'd prefer a bunch of ticked off atheists than a bunch of ticked off Christians. Christians have a bad track record when it comes to language they find offensive.

';Land of the Free?'; Sure, we're that too. We both agree that ';Free'; is used metaphorically, right? Because I'm not free to insider trade, yell ';Fire!'; in a crowded theatre, or murder your dad. In this sense we're about as ';Free'; as people in any first world country. I think this is a nice little saying that means nothing, so by all means continue saying it if it makes you feel a little better about things. Or don't. I don't care.

Is it an either/or situation? Where's the excluded middle? I figure both sayings are harmless because they are meaningless. Knock yourself out if you want to say them. But don't pretend they have any kind of value, intellectual, spiritual, or otherwise.
Read the rules and the reason for our country--the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

The declaration mentions the creator in general terms. The constitution (Bill of Rights) explicitly states no laws may be made enforcing belief.

So, millions of arguments about true intent or so on do not matter. These are the rules we agreed to.
';Under god'; is one irritating addition to the pledge of allegiance that our founding fathers would feel ashamed of. It was added in 1954 after years of lobbying by religious groups. Gross insertion of religious meme aimed at children at schools.
It SHOULD be land of the Free, but people take things too far. We can't speak of God or Jesus in a public setting, it seems. We are judged SO harshly for being a Christian because we're not ';accepting';. Since when did acceptance become the ultimate good? Just because society thinks one way doesn't mean I have to agree with it. I should have the authority and the freedome to:

    1. Rear my children how I believe (I should be able to spank them without fear of having them stolen from me to be raised by an inept government).

    2. Make money (not have taxes increased upon me because I decided not to use credit cards and live a modest life instead of living extravagantly and then asking for help when I've lived beyond my means).

    3. Express my thoughts (I am allowed to say what I want to say. I don't care if you interpret them as racism. Believe it or not, sometimes people just SAY things! They don't deeply analyze them all the time! I don't suddenly have empathy for a thief when I realize that they're a different race. If he/she's a thief, to jail they should go!).

    4. Determine my own amount of safety (no LAW should tell me to buckle my seatbelt. That's MY decision. I should be able to kill myself if I want to. My body, my decision).

    5. Determine who I have sex with (I don't believe that God intended for gay marriages or sex before marriage or divorce, but I don't believe that's the government's place ither).
    I think we are moving from ';Under Imaginary Friend'; to ';Land of the Free';

Freedom is the right of all humans, not the right of some.
Listen to the pastafarian. Most of our founding fathers were atheists or Deists. It's a shame that our pledge has been so bastardized. Get your grimey hands off of our pledge Christians! :( please :)
    Actually, we are the ';Home of the Brave';
Let's see first what computerization can do to change america, the world of automation.
';Home of the brave';. That's why we always call everybody else ';cowards';.
No it's not one nation under god.. of course it can't be when they wont even let ppl pray in school... in some instances you can't even say AMEN (what is that about?)

How is the United States more of a ';Federalist'; nation than a ';Republican'; nation?

';Federalist'; as in the Federalist party established by Alexander Hamilton and ';Republican'; such as the Democratic-Republican party lead by Thomas Jefferson... and I meant to imply how is it this way in today's timeHow is the United States more of a ';Federalist'; nation than a ';Republican'; nation?
Federalist favor a strong, centralized government while Republicans believe that government should be smaller and have less control over state and social affairs. During the Bush administration there was much deregulation of many government influences built up during the Democratic Bill Clinton area. Republicans reduce government because they believe that American's should control their own destiny and take care of themselves. Federalist tend are heavy with regulation because they believe they are protecting everyone's interests whether they like it or not. Obama's health care reform, with a social option, the government's bail-out programs are examples of moving toward a Federalist approach where the government is expanding it's influence on previously untouched territory. How is the United States more of a ';Federalist'; nation than a ';Republican'; nation?
Federalists backed a policy of encouraging manufacturing and trade, while the D/R was more oriented towards promoting agricultural interests.

Does the growing power of global-sized corporations threaten the nation-state system? Why or why not?

Although it is popular for people to say 'yes.' There is no actual evidence that this is actually the case.

When you look for examples of the results of what happend when an international corporation and a government had a conflict with each other - the corporation has always lost.

A recent example is Venezula's recent nationalization of the oil fields - the corporations simply had to take a multi-billion dollar loss and they had no recourse.

Other examples are countries defaulting on debt. When this happens the banks that lent the money are helpless.

In fact the only threat an international corporation can make to a country is to walk away and never do business with them again.Does the growing power of global-sized corporations threaten the nation-state system? Why or why not?
FDR once said: ';The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to the point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any controlling private power'.

Multi-billion-dollar corporations could easily - under the right instances of weakened government authority - become those 'controlling private powers' that dictate to government how things will be run, what taxes they will pay, and what laws they will obey.

In fact, given the massive corporate lobbyist efforts in Washington, DC these days, I'm not sure we're not already to that point! -RKO-Does the growing power of global-sized corporations threaten the nation-state system? Why or why not?
Yes, it's The New World Order. The first President Bush talked about it so has, Henry Kissinger, Gordon Brown and others have as well.

Learn about the banking system. The Federal Reserve, IMF, The Bank of International Settlements, The Bank of England and there's others.

  • If, Africa would have State/Nations in the place of countries made for the Europeans, would it be less poor?

I believe that the majority of wars was because the ethnic groups mixed in countries made for Europeans... Africans could not make their State/Nations like the Europeans doIf, Africa would have State/Nations in the place of countries made for the Europeans, would it be less poor?
Shanghai, that's just blatantly racist. Africans are not ';greedy and corrupt'; any more than anyone else is.

If the Europeans had never colonised Africa, what we would see today would be less ';artificial'; nations that are essentially the areas of land in which the tribes live. And yes, there would still unfortunately be wars, but they would be easier to resolve because different peoples would not have been forced together in the same country. There would still be instances where a big tribe conquers a small tribe - and that can lead to rebellions, riots, insurgency, terrorism...

However, Africa was colonised by the Europeans and there are many instances where the division of land when the Europeans left has caused a lot of trouble. Maybe if the land was divided more appropriately and with better care, there would be less strife. The British set up many democracies when they left, which meant that the country could fend for itself, but some colonial powers just left the land as it was, with the natural resources unavailable to the country that needs them.

However, the biggest problem is that of debt. After the colonialist powers pulled out, they loaned a lot of money to the African countries to get them going. This was good, and kickstarted a lot of economies. The trouble is, these rich countries now want their money back, which is crippling an economy that otherwise could grow and flourish. THAT is the problem why parts of Africa are so poor.

And whoever it was that said 'democracy is a dirty word in africa' what on earth are you talking about? Many people in Africa have spent their lives either upholding a perfectly good democratic system or campaigning for one! People there want freedom and equality just as much as the rest of us.If, Africa would have State/Nations in the place of countries made for the Europeans, would it be less poor?
I see your point, but weren't these indigenous tribes fighting among themselves long before the Europeans imposed their statist system on them? H.G. Wells suggested drawing national boundaries along racial and religious lines back at the beginning of the 20th Century, but the problem with that simplistic philosophy is that no matter where you draw the lines, you're going to have border areas where two rival groups meet and create conflicts. There's also the problem of two groups claiming the same turf. So would the Africans have been any better off if the white man had never set foot on its shores? As the Brits say, not bloody likely!
    Hi there.

You make a very good point. The countries represent colonial conquest, not ethnicity.

Botswana is an exception, basically encompassing the land of the Swana - no coincidence that it is one of the least corrupt, best run and peaceful countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

A division along ethnic lines would make a lot of sense, like all the trouble in the former Yugoslavia proved.

    Cheers, Steve.
The reason Africa is still poor, although East Asia, which was just as poor as Africa one hundred years ago is no longer poor, is that the Africans refuse to practice birth control. That's also why they have such a high rate of HIV infection.
They would still be fighting anyways and some tribes are too small. Some have 30 million people, others have around 500,000 people.

However, their countries would be more political stable if it was divided by ethnic group instead of 100 or so
No because they had no idea beyond the tribes,, No idea of countries or nations ,, Civilisation and the rest were so far behind .. As for democracy... Its a dirty word in most African countries ,,
So you think that it has nothing to do with their war like tribal culture and their greedy and corrupt nature.

    come get real

Ohio State is #1 in football and basketball this week, how does that settle with the rest of the nation?

The football team is a no brainer, and the basketball team doesnt even have the (accrding to espn, hoops magazine, etc) best freshman center since patrick ewing in Greg Oden. Do you not like one school dominating both polls? What are the chances of them winning the Chip in both?Ohio State is #1 in football and basketball this week, how does that settle with the rest of the nation?
football i can understand, basketball, i'm skeptical since it's still early in the season, everyone better watch out for the team with the best freshman in Paulr Harris and SyracuseOhio State is #1 in football and basketball this week, how does that settle with the rest of the nation?
Theres so much talk about Greg Oden right now. If theyre winning in both categories that just goes to show what kind of athletic program they have. However basketball just started so it could change.
    buckeye
if there really that good then yea they should have #1 in both polls. now the basketball one is a little early to start hype on but the football one they have.
Good question. Unlike football, the season will develop and we'll see a better picture. A loss at this point in the season shouldn't demote you. That being said, I don't agree with them being ranked #1. I believe that ranking belongs to the best team in the country. And I believe that team in Nort Carolina. I know they lost to Gonzaga, but everyone knows how good Gonzaga is. A perrenial power that has made it's name defeating better opponents. At the end of the year, the Tar Heels will be raising banner number 5 and this will all be a moot point.
    THEY WILL NOT WIN BOTH.
I am not in the rest of the nation, I am in the center of it and it goes well with me.
The school's athletic dept and the respective coaching staffs have just done an outstanding job...I think Ohio State's unusual prominence in both sports this year is great for college sports... Sets a standard of excellence for other programs...I am a true Tennessee Vol fan, but I respect the effort Ohio State has put into building this year's programs...That football team is the best, and the hoops team could be

Is the nation state a thing of the past?

nation stateIs the nation state a thing of the past?
no not really -- iran and korea are close to that!!!Is the nation state a thing of the past?
I shall continue to pray that the nation state will not die. The agenda of the EU is to destroy the cultures that define the peoples of Europe, creating a new America in the ';Old World.'; And clearly it isn't democratic, as Ireland's vote seems not to matter to Brussels. Clearly, it isn't in the favor of the Irish people, nor the other peoples of Europe. Each group should have the right to self-determination.
The powerful internationalists who destroy our culture, plunder oil resources and pit Christian against Muslim certainly wish to end the nation state so that all power will be vested in the faceless controllers of international capital.

Nation states keep each other in check and to do this their leaders have to earn the trust and confidence of their people. End nation states and you enslave most of the world's population.
Sorry, I don't understand exactly what you are asking.

Will the United States of America change as a nation?

Natural resources are depleting. Oil prices are on the rise. When oil eventually runs out, will this change America as a nation? America is a nation on wheels. Oil running out will be detrimental to the economy, but also foreign policies. How will it obtain more oil? Will it have to go towards Middle Eastern countries and gather more oil for their own need? Or will they have another solution? Will the United States of America change as a nation?
The United States have been in a process of change, since it's formation. We've come a long way from the Articles of Confederation to today's modern Democracy.

This has taken many books on the subject. From national history, to personal histories. I mean, The Revolutionary war, versus the Life of George Washington.

As for energy, we have the technology to change now. It's just not ';cost effective'; enough, yet. Big business won't make a big enough profit, so it won't happen.

As far as oil prices go, it's a fabricated shortage, designed to drive up profits. For every expert who says we're running out, NOW!, there is another who says we can continue at our current rate of consumption for generations, before any noticeable shortage occurs.

The oil industry has a lot of advertising money, to tell us we're short. If you look, we have resources we haven't tapped into. Look at Alaska. The Russians would love to sell us oil. Why hasn't anybody tried to get it? It would drive down the price per barrel.

The sad part is, nothing will happen, until we have no choice. Follow the money yourself. Will the United States of America change as a nation?
It won't go anywhere for more oil. Here is where the free market will come into play. Oil prices will rise to the point of being unfordable, and people will look elsewhere for oil. We will remain a nation on wheels, but not gas powered wheels. Our foreign policy will definitely change, but that doesn't mean that we will abandon the Middle East. Instead, our priorities will change and we will likely try harder for a lasting peace.
Of course it will change as a nation. The question you should be asking is: Will it change soon enough to stop catastrophe, or too late?
I don't like to think about this stuff it gives me headaches!
Let's see, I do agree that it will probably not change until it is too late, but waiting is wasting, and it's all up to the children of today. They have to care if the country is going to change because soon it will be up to them.
    i hope sooo!!
they will start a war with Saudi Arabia and they will claim they have weapons of mass destruction
I think terrorists are out to get America and they will do something that would affect the country and its free outlook first.

We can innovate over the longer term to address energy issues.

There should be a strategy on how to address climate change overall.

We need Al Gore for this.
I don't think change will come until it is too late unfortunately
I hope all first world nations change for the better.

How does the other more influential nations feel about the state of Israel?

    Russia and China for example?

Do they support the existence of an Israeli government in Palestine the same as America?

Also do any Arab nations have particularly close ties with these nations? How does the other more influential nations feel about the state of Israel?
Russia has quite a complex relationship with Israel. During the cold war as Israel was staunchly pro American and the west and so it was considered anti-Israel. However many of Israels inhabitants are Russian Jews and many of it founding fathers surprisingly socialist. Since the end of the Cold War zero-sum thinking which guided the Kremlin for many years has ceased. In fact, Putin's policy towards the region has been anything but ideological.Learning from U.S. policymakers who for many years developed relations with both Arab states and Israel and were thus at an advantage when it came to resolving disputes and capitalizing on economic opportunities. Simply put they just want to make money, Im pretty sure China's the same. How does the other more influential nations feel about the state of Israel?
Although the government of Russia is today concern about energy resources control, their ministry of international affairs, Alexandr Salt谩nov, have expressed that Israel and Palestine must to talk to resolve their conflicts.

The government of China disapproves Israeli military actions against their neighbors and support Palestinians.

Arab nations which have not close ties with the USA, have close ties with Russia and China.
Am Yisroel chai! May Israel live forever!

I am impressed with the way Israel has taken a desert land and turned it into a verdant oasis in the Middle East. How many people are aware that Israelis invented and developed a drip irrigation system that they shared with the world, so that some of the world's other barren places could grow food crops more successfully?

What was accomplished during the meeting of heads of states at the United Nation?

Lots of inspirational speeches but does anyone listen? Did Obama convince Khadafy, Kim Il, Ahmanedajd (sp?) and Hugo Chavez to to conform with internationally agreed rules and treaties? Seemed like it's the same rhetoric at the United Nations as last year and the years before that. What was accomplished during the meeting of heads of states at the United Nation?
The Security Council voted unanimously that all nuclear weapons should be gotten rid of, doesn't that count for something? Certainly wasn't one of Bush's priorities. What was accomplished during the meeting of heads of states at the United Nation?

1: Well there was the issue of climate change which you seem to be ignoring. Japan agreeing to a 25% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2020 and China agreeing to reduce energy intensity.

2: There was the advancements on nuclear non-proliferation that somebody else mentioned.

3: Creation of the Global Jobs Pact.

4: Creation of the Global Impact Vulnerability Alert System.

5: They devised an agreement whereby in the case a global flu pandemic certain countries would donate vaccines to those countries without the necessary resources.

Global politics is much broader then a simple focus on nuclear proliferation. Iran and North Korea have every right to develop nuclear capabilities, as worrying as that may be and the UN is simply a mediator, they can't just go flexing their muscles and expect everyone to bend to the will of the west.
Absolutely nothing was accomplished. Nothing much has been accomplished at the UN in 60 years.

Why are Hong Kong in the Olympics as a nation when it is well known that they are a state of China?

Especially as China are hosting it, I mean, why would they allow it, no government not even Hong Kong's sees them as a nation. Neither do the UN or the IOC? So why??Why are Hong Kong in the Olympics as a nation when it is well known that they are a state of China?
Hong Kong and China has agreed that there's one China but two different political systems. Why are Hong Kong in the Olympics as a nation when it is well known that they are a state of China?
Hong Kong (or Republic of China, offically Taiwan) are considered Commonwealths. These are similar to US Virgin Islands, Guam, Pureto Rico, which are also commonwealths. All commonwealth's are self governing territories of various countries. For example Puerto Rico’s designation as a commonwealth implies an ongoing relationship with the US, but does not imply statehood. Since these Commonwealths are self governing, they are not officially part of the country and can therefore have their own olympic teams.

Hong Kong is kinda like Washington DC. Its not really as city or a state. Its more like a separate district that is part of the country.
Obviously the world sees Hong Kong as it's own country. Otherwise they wouldn't be going to the olympics...
hong kong has its own NOC back in the days, pretty much same as usa and us virgin island, and so on and so on.
Why are GB a separate team when they are the 53rd state of America?
Why do Scotland and Wales have their own footy and rugby team when they are colonies of England?

One mans opinion on the nation and the state of affairs......this is my opinion, whats yours?

its very important that the aerican people be on the same page....even if w dont agree with it, weneed to know what our neighbors think. its NECESSARY for a unified nation, now were not unified.....after you read my opinion, please tell mme yours!

i grew up in a trailer park in az....whats worse is im not the kind of person that has friends or anything...so i became a social observer, outside looking in.....and from what ivre seen......

there is very little upward mobility for the very bottom classes. the land of oppurtunity exists only for those who already have some means. in todays world, education doesnt mean crap because everyone holds a degree, so it takes connections. so, from my eye (which is skewed) it would seem the the system is set up to keep poor people poor an reliant of the government...........which is good because these are alot of the soldiers that are dying in iraq. are the poor becoming the serf population? are they powerless, i think so...what do you think? One mans opinion on the nation and the state of affairs......this is my opinion, whats yours?
there is a mental aspect that plays a vital role in the success of people. A poor, yet, fundamentally sound in academia, student who does well in school will warrant a few prospects to a good college.......or if he doesn't find college a necessity then he will do quite well in whatever company he works in.

However, there are not many incentives for people in the low income bracket. Even if there are, most don't have the ability(mental capability) to execute a plan to work in their favor and use those incentives.

so, basically, I think those in the poor community have no other choice but to be there because of their limitations. One mans opinion on the nation and the state of affairs......this is my opinion, whats yours?
First of all, I consider myself to be lower middle class, economically. While I agree that Americans need to work together for the common good, this doesn't always mean we will be on the same page. The sharing of beliefs and ideas is a good thing as long as you are not forcing your beliefs on anyone else. As far as the government keeping people poor, although there are many obstacles in changing your station in life, I believe ultimately, through education and perseverance you can accomplish whatever goals you set for yourself.

It feels very claustrophobicHow does it feel to be living in the United States, a nation of ';coercive tolerance';?
People who say the United States is a free and open society are completely in the dark. The Founding Fathers wanted a Republic, not a democracy. U.S. credit systems have virtually enslaved every citizen. Ever since the creation of the 18th Amendment in 1917, our country has been living on borrowed time. Becuase Our Fed Reserve can print on demand without the backing of gold, the dollar is an empty promisory note, creating an entire generation of feigned wealth and economic growth. Our government is fiscally scizophranic, Washington owes more money than the rest of the world combined, to the tune of 37 trllion dollars. (The average family of four owes 500,000) We put off housing mortgages every decade, pay higher premiums in gasoline, throw more money into education which is getting worse, and all for what?? Starting in 2011, our social security will be giving out more than it takes in.Watch out, in a few years, we are going to be in another stock crash FAR WORSE than the great depression.

America is a great melting-pot alright. If you come here and do not fit the mold already provided, then you do not belong. How does it feel to be living in the United States, a nation of ';coercive tolerance';?

Coercive tolerance? You don't haaave to tolerate anybody or anything, you're free to suffer the consequences of not getting along with people. That's pretty much how every society is set up. Most people just prefer to get along because it's easier. And if you leave others alone, you tend to be left alone yourself.

How long before Obama renames this nation as the Nanny States of America?

Nanny state is a term that refers to state protectionism, economic interventionism, or regulatory policies (of economic, social or other nature), and the perception that these policies are becoming institutionalized as common practice. Opponents of such policies use the term in their advocacy against what they consider as uninvited and damaging state meddling. It has been referred to as a form of political correctness. How long before Obama renames this nation as the Nanny States of America?

McCain's views on immigration are actually rather progressive (as are Bush's), but got him in trouble early in his campaign (he had to fly coach for a while!!)

But, since he has not incensed the right wing with this lately, all is forgiven.

This is a no-win subject for the R's. If McCain talks about it, they gain some indies and Latino voters, but repel much of their hard-core base.

What was the role of adversity,or hardship, in the devlopment of nation states?

Not sure I totally understand the question, but here goes. I suppose you could say that the need to take care of the public's welfare led to an increasingly centralized governing body, a necessity for the development of the nation state. Could look at the Poor Laws in Britain duing the Tudor era. Or maybe Bismarck's social reforms following unification in Germany. A welfare state needs a bureaucracy and those seem to go hand in hand with nation states. Unless I am totally misunderstanding the question.

Why did Phil Gramm (Republican, bank deregulation crusader) call the United States a 'Nation of Whiners)?

Because he was royally insulted when he found out that not everyone approves of his social darwinist agenda. Why did Phil Gramm (Republican, bank deregulation crusader) call the United States a 'Nation of Whiners)?
Probably because we are. Because of our founding fathers and their brilliant efforts in forming our government, we have always been the greatest nation on earth. We have become a nation full of people that expect the government to take care of them. We want instant results, instant wealth and gratification. We are spoiled whiners.

    Example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoGYx35yp鈥?/a>Why did Phil Gramm (Republican, bank deregulation crusader) call the United States a 'Nation of Whiners)?
Because this nation used to be full of Americans who believed in the republic. Americans have been catered to and told what they want to hear to give them warm fuzzies. They have been conditioned to think that anyone who observes their constitutional right to protest is unpatriotic. This nation has forgot their 2nd amendment to bear arms and right to a militia against a tyrant government when the National Guard was on standby ready to be called out against those protesting the unconstitutional federal reserve in November 2008 or when our jobs were handed to foreigners in other countries. They have allowed bankers to buyout our government and they think its just a conspiracy theory. Thats why the CFR has had almost every presidential candidate since Ford as a member and the CFR seeks a ';new world order'; or one world government with no American or any nations sovereignty (See George Bush SPP treaty). I actually wonder if I will be able to come back to my country after my next deployment is finished and I leave in a couple of months for 1-3 years in the heat. Many Americans still think this is just a hoax even though the NWO is not even being hidden much anymore. Instead of being men and standing up for themselves and their country they whine and send an email to a congressman and think that is their patriotic duty. The media has conditioned the minds of Americans to think that they are it; they've arrived. The men have replaced true forms of masculinity with replacements, like watching sports or UFC. Thats fine but to keep your freedoms dont forget whats important. Through materialism, they have become feminized. The youth of today have become hollywoodized narcissistic mammas boys. Young men used to go through almost a right of passage. The internet is a place where you find young men and immature old men vent their built up energy by internet bullying or pornography obsessions. Drug use and alchohol is often found as a place of belonging. Men used to have more confidence because they had done things in life to give them that confidence in themselves. Now, they find that confidence through vanity. Indeed, this generation has become whiners because they lack the ability to stand up and be a man through patriotic deeds like fighting for our country in an honorable way and I dont mean going into another country and ruining it over WMDs that did not exist but rather, against a tyrannical government that is eroding our constitution. Women are standing up for themselves better than many men. The American government has raped our Constitution, spit on our rights, and taken our money at every turn. Our founding fathers would be appalled at the patriot act; which has a nice name but is a communist act more than anything. This nation is a republic and yet, Americans have allowed it to be called a democracy which is a communist version of a republic; where a republic is focused on individual rights and ownership and democracy is state ownership and privileges. The 2 are very different. The whiners accept every spoonful of **** the government feeds them and that, my friend, is why those kinds of Americans are called whiners and sheeple. I am what I call a saildier because I am a sailor and I wear and do the things of a soldier. I proudly serve my nations Navy combat team with honor, courage, and commitment. I will support and defend the constitution of the United States of America and I know what that means. So many of my brothers at arms have no idea. They just do what they are told and are ignorant to the rights the constitution provides its citizens, as are the majority of other Americans, and so, will not recognize an unlawful order if told to suppress a peaceful protest. Americans have become pathetically lazy, stupid enough to believe lies without researching it. They become lost in the details and are to lazy to dig through it to find the truth. This was a harsh word for a difficult question. If this is not you, then dont be offended. In my opinion and in accordance with what has been observed in recruits, this word is true of many Americans but is by no means true of all of us.
because a large portion of this nation are whiners! Ge-ez, where have you been over the past 8 years? We have gone from a government for the people to a government that controls the people.
Because he's a neocon and liked the way things were going.

I don't want Obama to follow Gramm's advice.

I want Obama to follow Ron Paul's advice.
The Republicans are a party of whiners, close but no cigar.

  • Is the state of the US, still one nation under God?

The state of the USA is in very sad shape and it is because the people of the individual states no longer make those they send to the central government accountable to them as is required in a Republic. The USA is a Republic NOT a democracy!

The one nation under God bit has been so over used just like the God Bless America signs you see everywhere that there is no longer any meaning behind them. They are just slogans now. Americans have been led to believe they are the savior of the world for so long they all believe they are. They never have been and never will be.

If you think this isn't so, do me a favor and read the web site I have listed below. See one of the things that the central government of the USA is doing and 98% of the people don't even know it. Then read the second site and see what the central government is allowing to happen to the military in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It is time that the people of the USA stand up and return your country to your people and not the dictates of a corrupt government. Is the state of the US, still one nation under God?
And thank you for understanding what I am trying to say as well. People need to learn what is really going on and don't seem to care as long as they are fat and think they are happy.

Is the state of the US, still one nation under God?
Sure our government has problems and mostly fails to represent the interests of the people, but I think that the point of the question was whether the saying ';one nation under God,'; still applies to the USA. The people succeed despite their government; similarly for students and schools.

Officially? No, and we never have been.
You have got to be joking - right?
No and it shouldn't be, since ';under God'; wasn't originally in the pledge of allegience in the first place.
';under god'; was added because of a true American...Joe McCarthy, the witch hunter with a high school education. (sarcasm)
Nope. Sorry to say it but we're now many nations under various Gods or no God at all.
One rather polarized nation under God.
Really? I think only your god could answer that one. Or are you making some elliptical reference to the two words inserted into the ';Pledge of Allegiance'; in 1954, the pledge itself having been penned in the early 1890's as part of a marketing effort?

Either way, I don't see much purpose to this question. You would have to make a reasonable case that it ever was in order to ask the question. If you think you could make a case that it ever was, I suppose a case could be made that it still was.

    PS

I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I believe the USA is one of the most professedly religious nations on earth.
Is it still a religious nation? Yes, though it doesn't have to be for everyone if they dont' want it to be.

Is that phrase still in the pledge? Yes

Should it be? No, it was added during the cold war to distinguish the US from the USSR (fact, believe it or not) and was NOT part of the original pledge of allegiance.
Remember Sodom %26amp; G0 when God said he would save it for only 5 believers? As long as there are prayers beaming up God will be there. The UN is however doing some major control planning for the whole world which is according to prophesy!
The US is still one nation with a fairly strong patriotic vein of national unity. Look to 9/11/01 American response to the terrorist attacks for proof.

The US is still under God. We are a mostly Christian nation, but religion is a fairly important aspect of life for most people in America across the religious spectrum, regardless of the name which we give Him: God, nature, the Designer/Creator, the Inner Light or Inner Voice, etc.

There is no question that the USA UNFIES herself as one nation and REMAINS under God; despite the significant energies an ';irate, and tireless minority setting brushfires'; of doubt, misinformation, divisions, conflict, and internal dissonance.
    not anymore....
It's just a coin motto. It never existed in any founding document. It was always an illusion to calm the masses.

If the european nations became a whole nation (the United States of Europe) would it be beneficial for the USA?

was wondering...if all the nations in the UE merged together for becoming a whole nation, like the USA...how the USA would react? would it be beneficial for the USA?If the european nations became a whole nation (the United States of Europe) would it be beneficial for the USA?
Economically such a formation would be beneficial. However, militarily it won't. As much as America loves democracy and as much as our government wants to preach about it and spread it, the reality is that our government doesn't actually want independent thinking democratic powers. Our government wants democracies that are submissive to its economic and political interests. So a huge european nation would more likely be a political and military threat/competitor. At the end of the day, our government doesn't really care about the governments of nation, as long as it's submissive in its policies and its relationship to America. That is the reality. So the best answer really would be No.

What was the first country to recognize the United States of America as a nation?

know the answer, but I'm curious to see how many people do not know this answer. What was the first country to recognize the United States of America as a nation?
Actually it's Morocco. Morocco was the first nation to recognize the fledgling United States as an independent nation in 1777. What was the first country to recognize the United States of America as a nation?
Some say Britian because Britain's formal surrender recognized the US in Sep 3, 1783 signed in Paris. Others say France because on Feb 14th, 1778 their fleet saluted an American Ship. But it was the Dutch on Nov 16, 1776.

In 1776, after the Declaration of Independence, the Dutch cannons at Fort Orange on the Caribbean island of Saint Eustace were the first to answer a salute from visiting American war ships. That was on 16th November 1776, and the visiting war ship was the Andrea Doria. Thus, The Netherlands was the first nation to recognize the United States of America. This is now known as The First Salute, and 16th November is Dutch-American Heritage Day.

However, this information about the Dutch is relatively new and for many years even Naval personal were unaware of this. I joined in 1989, and at that time we were still taught that the first salute came from France. Here's some info about that: On February 14, 1778, John Paul Jones sailed into Quiberon Bay, France, in the USS Ranger and saluted the French fleet anchored there. A nine-gun salute was given in return. A gun salute given to a revolutionary government was a signal of that country鈥檚 recognition. France became one of the first foreign powers to recognize the struggling government of the American Colonies.
The American Revolution refers to the political upheaval during the last half of the 18th century in which the Thirteen Colonies of North America overthrew the governance of the British Empire and collectively became the nation of the United States of America. In this period, the colonies first formed self-governing independent states, and then united against the British to defend that self-governance from 1775 to 1783 in the armed conflict known as the American Revolutionary War (or the ';American War of Independence';). This resulted in the states breaking away from the empire with the Declaration of Independence in 1776, effective victory on the battlefield in October 1781, and British recognition of United States sovereignty and independence in 1783.

It was ';Holland'; or, ';The Netherlands';. Their acknowlegment is known as ';The First Salute';.

Even today, our bond remains strong, as they even celebrate a ';Holland-America Day';, at least in part to commemorate our liberation of their country from The Nazis.

Listen to ';classicfm.nl';, a Netherlands Classic Radio station, and you will often hear American themes. Truly, they are some of the ';Good Guys'; who have shaped Western Science, Engineering and Technology.
    Le France.

(would have been the Dutch, however they coped out of funding the American Revolution not trusting American credibility.

Ironically, turns out the Dutch were right as it was same investment in the cause that crippled the French economy, and led to France's own revolution)

No, it's a scam. Here's how you can tell - they're offering a 'GED alternative'. There is no alternative GED. Either you take the GED or you take high school classes. There is no alternative exam to the GED that's worth the same, and you cannot take a GED online. Also, they're offering life experience credit. Very, very few real schools do this in any way, and online schools like this don't bother to find out if what you claimed you have done is true. It's a diploma mill. Don't waste your time or money on it, because a college will just laugh at you with a 'degree' from this 'school'.

uh..it is not about to happen..you have no clue whatsoever how much oil is untapped, more than anyone knows..that is, it's incalcuable how much there is..more huge fields are found all the time..heck, we got plenty right here in the good ole usa that democrats refuse to let us tap...50 years...WRONG!
There are hundreds of years worth of fossil fuels in known reserves, it's not going to happen any time soon. And by the time it does happen, we will have perfected a new energy source ( at least the global warming hype is doing on thing beneficial ).
When the oil runs out, the govts of the world will make wars over water.
bush will go outta business and end the war in iraq knowing thats was the only reason he invaded it
I don't think the oil will deplete in 50 years or so. I think there are still vast amounts of oil still untapped. They are now reomoving oil from the tar sands in Alberta Canada. They are new drilling rigs off the east coast of Canada. Although in Michigan last week I paid $3.79 a gallon its still cheaper than a cup of Starbucks coffee and my car will go a lot further, I will have to stop my car and get rid of that cup of coffee within 3 or 4 hours anyway.
    Relax KD ..

    and stop worrying ...

    we got on quite well for thousands of years without good ol '; petroleum ';

and when its all done and gone ..

Eventually, it will be more cost effective to switch to other energy sources. The consumers will eventually drive the market place as the cost savings increase.

State of the Wrestling Nation Address?

I feel it's time to start a revolution here in the wrestling section like those we have in the sports sections with the football, baseball, and basketball fans. True there's alot of fans younger then this soon to be 39 year old ody but why can't we start some Yahoo wrestling groups to have wrestling leagues on our console games like those with Madden football, baseball, or basketball does Also I like to see more blogs relasted to fanasty wrestling like dream matche and pay per views your thought on this is greatly honored because I hate seeing people leave without tring to do something. State of the Wrestling Nation Address?
poopState of the Wrestling Nation Address?
    .
    your right your the leader

Are you owned by or a co owner of the nation state?

Take the total amount of land mass in you're nation --- now take the total amount of persons over 21

Now divide that --- how many square KM or miles per person does that equal

If you were co - owner -- where is you're piece ?

If you are owned -- who holds the majority of the land mass

( If you are paying property tax then you don't own that land -- don't believe me -- try not paying it and see how long you stay on the land you think you ';own';)Are you owned by or a co owner of the nation state?
Very interesting question. I oppose property taxes for this very reason. Neither you or your heirs can ever actually own the land outright. This is permanent indebtedness when you get down to it.

As far as your other points go, I don't have a good answer because I'm opposed to any form of commune..ism.

Personally I have problems with shrinking public access to our waterways and especially access to beaches...oceans in general. Do I have a realistic answer that doesn't involve stripping people of property rights? No I don't.

Like I said, very interesting question. Are you owned by or a co owner of the nation state?
    1st ';you're'; = ';your';

    2nd ';you're'; = ';your';

I am owned my the state up until my taxes are paid... for Federal taxes that would be April 13th... then add all the state/local taxes and I think I own my land for at least half the year.

Republican from before she was born... and PROUD of it.
The rich and the churches own the land.

  • Anyone else see the irony that God's chosen nation of Israel is in a constant state of war?

The irony is that Muslims and Jewish people pray for the same god to help them win the war.Anyone else see the irony that God's chosen nation of Israel is in a constant state of war?
The day after the UN declared Israel a nation, Arab nations declared war on her. That was in May of 1948. Since Arab nations are in the UN, there's plenty of irony to go around.Anyone else see the irony that God's chosen nation of Israel is in a constant state of war?
lol, now that someone mentions it, that is some funny stuff
because of there unbelief of Christ has already come
    Maybe God likes wars
    No irony there.

The world persecuted Jesus as Israel is persecuted.

The world persecutes Christians as Jesus was persecuted.

Nope, it is to be expected.
It's not ironic...it's the enemy. Satan has always had it in for everyone...especially God's chosen people (Israel). Spiritual warfare has been going on for thousands of years. Some day soon, God will put Satan in his place...the lake of fire!

God Bless Israel and God Bless the USA!!!

BTW...the Israelites (Jews) are still God's chosen people....AND as Christians, we are all children of God. We have been graphed into the family (root).

    God / Jesus ROCKS!!!
apparently you have never read Gods word
    NO
but God's chosen people under the new covenant are no longer the Israelites. they are anyone who trusts in Christ as Savior.
Yes, but who are we to judge? That's why religions are in such turmoil.
There's no irony in it at all. It was foretold in the Bible.
For the last 1400 years there has been a war in the middle east.

Look it up Encarta, history of the middle east.

God cast them off as his people. After the death of Jesus.

Those people are very war like.
Israel is NO LONGER God's ';chosen nation.'; That status was the result of the promise God made to Abraham (Gen 12) which was fulfilled at the coming of the kingdom (the church) on Pentecost after Jesus' return to heaven.
No, I see no irony. Have you ever read the Bible?
    no
shylock (merchant of venice by shakespear) said; god i know we are your chosen people but for once could you chose someone else?
Gee, it seems I've read this before ... it was in a book called the Bible. I welcome you to read through it.
I think its ironic that you should question what God does or doesn't allow.
    yes
I see it as a testimony to God that the enemies of Isreal can't destroy it.

    Muhahahaha...
there is no nation by the name of israel... read the history

Before Israel became a nation state in the late 40s, what was that area? Was it part of any country at all?

What was Israel before it became a nation state in the late 1940s?Before Israel became a nation state in the late 40s, what was that area? Was it part of any country at all?
Palestine and Jordan (the trans Jordan) were all part of a British Mandate under the League of Nations, and Lebanon and Syria were a French Mandate. This dated from the end of WWI and the Ottoman Empire. Before it was a backwater province of the Empire. Before Israel became a nation state in the late 40s, what was that area? Was it part of any country at all?
That land was a British colony. The British seized it from the Turks in WWI, %26amp; the Turks took it from the Mamluks in the 1500s. Before them, it was ruled by Saladin's descendants.

The ancient land of Palestine was inhabited %26amp; ruled by different people along its long history. %26amp; it's sacred to Jews, Christians, %26amp; Muslims.
it was palestine. Present day it is Isreal and Lebannon, well actually isreal won land from Syria in their first war.

forgot to mention that it was owned by Britain because of the end of the Ottoman empire
It was the British Mandate of Palestine - the former province of the Ottoman Empire was put under British trusteeship by the League of Nations after World War I.
All of Palestine was under British control

At what point does a community become responsible for the health of individuals. When does a state or a nation

become responsible for individual or community health? What are your thoughts on responsibility for individual health? To what extent is each individual accountable for his or her own level of wholeness and soundness? At what point does a community become responsible for the health of individuals. When does a state or a nation
Good liberal answer Fish GuyAt what point does a community become responsible for the health of individuals. When does a state or a nation
In a country like the US, there should be access to affordable health care for all.

It is the individual responsibility of each person to seek health care, but the situation we find ourselves in now is that affordable health care is available only to those who have higher paying jobs, or who have medical insurance through a company (unless you have a pre existing condition, then you may be out of luck anyway).

The US is the ONLY westernized nation without some sort of universal health care.

That leaves millions of working folks, small business owners and employees, people who do contract work and so on, uninsured. This is in addition to millions of poor families and individuals without access to health care.
A truly altruistic culture is responsible for the health and well being of every member of the culture, from conception to death and beyond. A member of such a culture is much more likely to be more personally responsible for his/her own health.

If your mother nursed your siblings whenever they were ill, but told you to take care of your own damned problems, when you were ill, do you think you would be more or less likely to develop the self esteem required to maintain your own ';wholeness and soundness';?

A healthy culture is a culture that makes everyone aware that they matter. It makes everyone feel that they are appreciated by the other members of their tribe. That feeling of belonging is far less likely to breed contempt toward the culture.

You may not believe it, because you have great health insurance or are physically fit, or whatever, but it is in all of our best interest to make the least amongst us know that they belong to the tribe. Even you.
Those who truely cannot provide for themselves should be helped. The problem is, who decides the cut-off line. I have friends who would qualify for free hand outs that provide their own health care easily. I have others who make alot of money and choose not to provde healthcare for themselves. The responsibility for healthcare rests firmly on the shoulders of the individual. If it does not then we will wind up with Canadian or European style healthcare in this country. Ask Ted Kennedy how he would feel about that. He would still be waiting for a diagnosis for his cancer in that system.
The government should only be responsible for those who cannot do for themselves - not those who will not do for themselves.
    Only individuals can be responsible.

What is a nation and how does the concept differ from that of a state?

If you answer this question with detailed (reasons, results, resources, etc.), I will be very happy. Thank you very much from now. What is a nation and how does the concept differ from that of a state?
A state is a parcel of land that is allowed to for the most part govern its self. Make rules, laws, carry out trials for criminals. fund its cities from the point that the city cant do it. Take care of it holdings, Roadways, parks, welfare systems, Medical for the elderly. Anything for the people of the state.

A nation is a main ruling government, It sets major guide lines that the states and the people of all the states must abide by. If a state does not wish to follow the guide lines then the National Government with holds tax dollars that would have gone to that state, for example. In the US the federal Government has set up guide lines that , you must wear a seat belt in a car, also that the legal amount of alcohol in the blood while driving a car is .08%. If the states did not change the laws to conform than the states would loose money for roadways and transportation. Which means that roads would be worse than they are and bridges would crumble. Or buses would run out of fuel. What is a nation and how does the concept differ from that of a state?
The meaning of those two words varies by context. In the US for example states are semi-autonomous political subdivisions. Other times, nation and state may be used interchangably -- i.e. state of Israel is the same as nation of Israel.
a nation can also be a state. But the usage of the word Nation is a group of people united by something like culture or heritage.
more than one State can belong to more than one Nation

Two of the above: Includes a distinct identity and might include a common language

Dates back to at least the first millennium AD - this is wrong. Those were still city-states then.

    ';France itself probably emerged as the first nation-state as it resisted conquest at the Battle of Valmy in 1792';

In your opinion, which state holds the best representation of the rest of the nation?

Im curious to see what the majority says..In your opinion, which state holds the best representation of the rest of the nation?
Ohio. for example, whatever Presidential candidate wins Ohio also wins the election. In your opinion, which state holds the best representation of the rest of the nation?
I agree it is probably Ohio. Southern Ohio has a lot in common with the southern states, it has large Industrial cities that is typical in Northern states and rich agricultural rural areas like the midwest, and even some mountains and mining. The fraction of black in the population is near the nation average and the have no dominate religious group.

If the state of Maryland is it's own nation, how many gold medals will they get?

With Michael Phelps, Maryland would have more gold medals than all the other nations except China and U.S.If the state of Maryland is it's own nation, how many gold medals will they get?
i think canada should try and invade maryland , they might win a few medals then haha If the state of Maryland is it's own nation, how many gold medals will they get?
He already has more then India's and Mexico's history.

Is nationalism and/or the ideal of the nation-state bankrupt and outdated as an ideology in today's world?

The concept of the nation-state has been around since the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia which ended the Thirty Years War (a war between Protestant and Catholic powers). This treaty is important in that in wars before it powers (typically royal powers) hired mercenaries to fight their wars. These ';armies'; fought for the highest payer of wages and held no allegiances to whom they fought for.

The Treaty of Westphalia changed that and introduced the notion of the nation-state, which entails in itself the notion of sovereignty. Sovereignty is the notion of supreme and final political power over whichever region you are in charge of. This means that you make THE final decision. The Treaty of Westphalia introduced into international law and ideology the right of a nation to make its own decisions without force of an outside source. Which leads us back to the hired mercenaries. Nations now had full control over themselves and their people and the citizens of the newly titled nation-state gained a sense of pride in their culture and country and now form armies to fight for and defend it.

To answer your question, no, the concept of the nation-state is NOT outdated in today's world. In fact, it is a more highlighted issue now with war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Those opposed to the war take issue (along with oil and bad planning) with the invasion of another country rather than taking diplomatic steps or letting them take responsibility for their own nation. The wars (especially Iraq) question the sovereignty of other nations and threaten to shake up the international community. Is nationalism and/or the ideal of the nation-state bankrupt and outdated as an ideology in today's world?
not yet. Nation- state is new it started in the late 1800s where most of te world was ruled by Romans or Muslims and the rest . Will the world go back to that stage we never knowIs nationalism and/or the ideal of the nation-state bankrupt and outdated as an ideology in today's world?
I'm in favour of tearing down all national barriers and allowing anyone to go anywhere.

    .

(ps: Does anyone know wtf Mark is talking about?)
Unfortunately it is necessary as long as neo-colonialism is with us... Once all humans begin to be treated as equal by the super-powers, there will be no need for nation states.... we will have local government and the global government instead.

Would you rather have a single government that supports education and bringing prosperity to everyone in the world regardless of wealth or education versus tribal leaders and military dictartors that only care about themselves? Is having a military leader that punishes simple infractions with death as per there religion as bad as a regime that strives for reform of the criminal mind and does not wish harm to come unless it matches the severity of the crime? Which sounds better to you? World peace or perpetual Jihad?

  • What was the role of adversity or hardship in the developement of the nation states?

It tends to bolster national feeling and also the requirement of centralisation into a nation to deal with adversity. For example, national identity wasn't really a big deal in France until they had provincial revolts and foreign invasion. It was during its wars that the key elements of the nation formed, from the army, to a national economy, to a national set of laws, to a national mythology. You can pick many other examples where a similar process has happened. Similarly, you can look at countries which haven't had it really bad at any point in their history and where nationalism isn't such a big issue. What was the role of adversity or hardship in the developement of the nation states?
what do you mean by ';nation states'; ?What was the role of adversity or hardship in the developement of the nation states?
To me, whenever I am faced with adversity or hardship, I am being asked to GROW... to rise above my present state of wisdom and knowledge and to search for a new answer to handle the situation. A nation states must be able to come together and find a ';road'; of community agreement that is based on understanding of all... wisdom... giving... and sometimes this is done only after some strive and lose in their domination... It is very hard to get a diverse group of people to agree upon a unified way to structure their culture... Physical courage takes guts... but Moral courage takes more guts... Wisdom is never earned in happy times... only thru adversity and hardship!

Is the United States Of America one nation indivisble?

Was this the intent of the founding fathers when they wrote the Constitution? Is the United States Of America one nation indivisble?
No, our forefathers believed in states' rights and believed that the United States could be dissolved if a tyrannical government arose. Funny, but when one talked about the United States in the early 1800's they spoke in plural: The United States are... not the United States is. Therefore, our government was designed to be divisible if the states of this union so chose. Moreover, most of the states that ratified the Constitution would not have agreed to sign it if they could not choose to leave the union. Sadly, most Americans do not realize this fact, and history is being revised. Is the United States Of America one nation indivisble?
That was the intent, however, that is not the outcome.

Dayman says the founding fathers didn't know we were going to be overrun with illegal politicians, but they did.

The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it always to be kept alive.

    Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826)

I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.

    Thomas Jefferson

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

    Thomas Jefferson

In my opinion, this country could not be more divided. The majority of our politicians are no longer ';For The People.'; They have their own agendas.
At the time they where concerned with the country breaking apart. It was fragile and new. This does NOT imply we all its citizens must agree on issues as most have suggested.

indivisible = Incapable of being divided into smaller pieces.....uh ya that is the point. The point of the civil war was over how we planned to structure it. (Federalist of Confederacy) NOT SLAVERY. i am not saying controlled by the feds but the power was given to the states who controlled the federal government. The federal government was small and had limited power. That has obviously been changed over the years. the reason it was designed this way was to prevent a controlling tyrannical government from taking over.

Our founding fathers where not stupid nor where they ignorant. They new government could be corrupt and recommended that it be rebuilt every 20 years and that parties NOT be allowed. They wanted individuals to run for office. They also felt that the average citizen was too ignorant to vote and built the electoral collage. I would agree on that point. People select candidates for stupid reasons.
The intent was that we were one country, under God that had broken away from England and were creating a democracy (as opposed to a monarchy) that would give liberty and freedom to all that seeked it.

Seems kindof weird now, considering the state and fights of the country, today.
That was the intent, howrever they did not realize that so may politicians would seperate the nation by party politics for their own gain, basically they had not anticipated that all of the politicians in the future would be corrupt.!!
It wasn't the founding fathers intent. It's all the idiots that came after them that created the divisions.
not now with all the libs wanting to change the constitution.
Might have been the intent but it certainly wasn't the outcome...
    In the past, yes

But now we are one pagan divided nation, Babylon if you will
That was the intent. I'm good with splitting up though.
It seemed good at the time. But not actually true anymore.
According to the Pledge of Allegiance, yes.
Yes, but then they brought in the blacks and it has been FU ever since.
    Yes.
    yes it was

How the concept of nation states evolved, and till when will it last?

Think of yourself as having a farm, or an orchard, and then putting a fence around it, to claim your territory. Well on a larger scale, a nation just has a bigger fence...

It will last as long as there is fencing material, and as long as people want to claim territories...

What is the PARTY IN POWER in the state of Texas, and party in power to the Nation??

I want detailed answers. What is the PARTY IN POWER in the state of Texas, and party in power to the Nation??
I think the republicans are in power of the state of Texas. Mainly because it was a republican state in the last election and that george bush was from there. Power of the nation?? Umm, I would believe it to be the republicans since bush is republican, but congress is still controlled by the democrats. Woohoo, now go answer my question. What is the PARTY IN POWER in the state of Texas, and party in power to the Nation??
Communists are definitely the party in power. It's eitehr them or the dictators, I can't remember....

Why did Obama choose India to be the first state visit of his Presidency and not a fellow Christian nation?

like Canada or the UK?Why did Obama choose India to be the first state visit of his Presidency and not a fellow Christian nation?
Because India, alliance-wise, is a lot more important than any Christian country. India has the military weaponry and the nukes necessary to keep Iran, China, and Russia all in check should they have any ideas.

Technology also has a lot to do with it as well, but I see this more as the world's two largest free countries looking to join forces in the War on Terror.

Sidenote: If Israel were smart, it would ally with India too.Why did Obama choose India to be the first state visit of his Presidency and not a fellow Christian nation?
I think India is one of the most important countries of the world. It is a very important network-partner for the US because in India there are a lot of people that will demonstrate a lot of high developed part of the industrie. Actually the IT-part is very important. Overthise that could be a sign for the ';new way';. The president make it possible to set up a better network, that fights for global freedom and a global network.
Actually, the US is NOT a christian nation. A lot of Americans make that mistake, woefully ignorant of their own heritage. You are lucky enough to have a secular constitution, guaranteeing separation of church and state, and therefore freedom of, and from, religion. (Unlike the UK, which has an established church).

Thomas Jefferson, in a letter countersigned by Washington, made it clear that 'America is by no means a Christian nation' (Quote!)
I did not know he made this decision

I don't think it matters either

as Christians we are called to share Jesus with those who are in need of Him

Also, The people of England no longer represent a Christian nation.

    America is on its way.

Nor does Obama represent a Christian president.
THE REASON: INDIA IS A RISING ECONOMIC POWER EN OBAMA WANTS INDIA ON THE AMERICAN SIDE TO FIGHT TERRORISM IN ASIAN REGION EN OTHER PROBLEMS AS IT IS THE ONLY RELIABLE DEMOCRACY IN THE REGION.

TO ';FELLOW CHRISTIAN NATION';: DID YOU KNOW THAT THE HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY IN INDIA IS MUCH OLDER THAT IN EUROPE?

EN THE WAY MUCH OLDER THAN IN USA OR CANADA AND NATURALLY UK!
The United States is not a Christian nation. I knew that before Obama said it. Our president gives the impression of not caring about nations who profess to be Christian (like Canada and the UK). I'm surprised it wasn't Norway, Mexico or Venezuela.
America has no official state religion. It's constitution, however, does guarantee freedom of religion. It's not a ';Christian nation';.
Maybe because India will have the largest population in the world by 2020.

They out number us 4 to 1 already. China and India are the most populous nations in the world.

    Man power = Power

    --Atheist
India is the only hope to keep pace with china and also pakistan.
Because Obama is a Christian in name only.
