Is nationalism and/or the ideal of the nation-state bankrupt and outdated as an ideology in today's world?

The concept of the nation-state has been around since the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia which ended the Thirty Years War (a war between Protestant and Catholic powers). This treaty is important in that in wars before it powers (typically royal powers) hired mercenaries to fight their wars. These ';armies'; fought for the highest payer of wages and held no allegiances to whom they fought for.

The Treaty of Westphalia changed that and introduced the notion of the nation-state, which entails in itself the notion of sovereignty. Sovereignty is the notion of supreme and final political power over whichever region you are in charge of. This means that you make THE final decision. The Treaty of Westphalia introduced into international law and ideology the right of a nation to make its own decisions without force of an outside source. Which leads us back to the hired mercenaries. Nations now had full control over themselves and their people and the citizens of the newly titled nation-state gained a sense of pride in their culture and country and now form armies to fight for and defend it.

To answer your question, no, the concept of the nation-state is NOT outdated in today's world. In fact, it is a more highlighted issue now with war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Those opposed to the war take issue (along with oil and bad planning) with the invasion of another country rather than taking diplomatic steps or letting them take responsibility for their own nation. The wars (especially Iraq) question the sovereignty of other nations and threaten to shake up the international community. Is nationalism and/or the ideal of the nation-state bankrupt and outdated as an ideology in today's world?
not yet. Nation- state is new it started in the late 1800s where most of te world was ruled by Romans or Muslims and the rest . Will the world go back to that stage we never knowIs nationalism and/or the ideal of the nation-state bankrupt and outdated as an ideology in today's world?
I'm in favour of tearing down all national barriers and allowing anyone to go anywhere.

(ps: Does anyone know wtf Mark is talking about?)
Unfortunately it is necessary as long as neo-colonialism is with us... Once all humans begin to be treated as equal by the super-powers, there will be no need for nation states.... we will have local government and the global government instead.
I am a citizen of the galaxy.

Time to go to the next level silly humans.
