Should the core political power of the nation rest with the federal government or state and local government?

It is the year 1800 and you are a member of the federalist party

can you explain why the power should rest with the federal governmentShould the core political power of the nation rest with the federal government or state and local government?
If the power did not rest within the Federal government, the United States of America would not exist. It would have essentially been a group of independent countries masquerading under one name. Imagine if every state had their own separate military and their own separate system of finances (i.e. coining separate money). Such a system does not create unity, it breeds conflict. In order to have unity, one governing body more powerful than the rest is a necessity. Otherwise, you get something like the United Nations which everybody knows is pretty ineffective and relatively pointless.Should the core political power of the nation rest with the federal government or state and local government?
I would say neither. It should rest with the people.

Governments are simply representatives of the people who should support their interests. Beyond that, I favor as much decentralization of government as possible. You are closest to your city government--you can talk to your council members and attend meetings with little inconvenience. Therefore they should exercise your power as a citizen. State governments are also closer to the people than the federal government.

The only vision of American society that I feel is valid is summed up by the statement: ';That government is best which governs least.'; Not much good government left.

The value of uniting the states into a whole nation is the protection of its citizens and defending our shores. I think we benefit by being one nation, but there is a point of diminishing returns.

In my lifetime the federal government has continued to become more powerful and most citizens neither know nor care.

I guess if I were a member of the Federalist Party I might be expelled for my views.
