What are the defining characteristics of nation-state?

the true definition is a country in which the territory boundaries match the ethnic boundaries and there is not alot of immigration ...

Japan and Iceland are good modern examples of this since they are basically one ethnicity and thereis little to no immigration of other ethnicities.

In todays world it is often used more liberally to match sovreignty to the territorial borders... making the US a nation-state in that definition although there are many ethniities .
